You finally found it. Whether it is a pristine 1967 Ford Mustang in California or a vintage Porsche 911 in Germany, buying your dream classic car is only the first step. Getting it to your garage in Dubai is a completely different adventure.
The UAE has one of the most vibrant car cultures in the world, and you will see stunning classic cars cruising down Jumeirah Beach Road every weekend. However, importing a vintage vehicle involves strict customs valuations, specialized transport methods, and specific RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) testing regulations.
A classic car is a delicate investment. You cannot simply hand the keys to a standard freight forwarder and hope for the best.
At Chevron Sea Shipping, we handle the secure transport and clearance of high-value automobiles. If you are planning to import a piece of automotive history into the UAE, here is everything you need to know.
1. The “30-Year Rule” and the Classic Classification
In Dubai, a car can only get the highly sought-after “Classic” (brown) license plates if it meets certain requirements.
- Generally, the UAE classifies a vehicle as a classic if it is 30 years old or older.
- The Benefit: Classic cars are exempt from some of the strict modern safety and emissions standards that standard imported cars must meet.
- However, they will still undergo a specialized technical inspection by the RTA or the Automobile & Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE) to determine how often and where they can be driven (e.g., some are restricted from major highways if they lack certain safety features).
2. Calculating UAE Customs Duties and VAT
Before you finalize your budget, you must calculate the taxes you will pay at Jebel Ali Port.
- The Formula: You will be charged a 5% Customs Duty plus a 5% Value Added Tax (VAT).
- The Valuation Trap: These taxes are calculated on the CIF value (Cost, Insurance, and Freight). This means you are taxed on the car’s price plus the shipping and marine insurance costs.
- Customs Assessment: Dubai Customs will look at and value the car in person. If you bought a restored 1960s Jaguar for a low price and then issued a commercial invoice that seems too low, Customs can value the car at its current market value and charge you taxes on that higher amount.
3. RoRo vs. Enclosed Container Transport
When shipping a car across the ocean, you have two main options. For a classic car, there is really only one correct choice.
- RoRo (Roll-On / Roll-Off): This is how standard dealership cars are shipped. The car is driven onto a massive ship and parked on an open deck. While it is cheaper, your vintage car is exposed to salt air, humidity, and the risk of being scratched by port workers.
- Enclosed FCL Container (The Chevron Standard): We highly recommend booking a dedicated 20ft container (Full Container Load). Your classic car is carefully driven inside, securely lashed to the floor using heavy-duty wheel chocks and soft-tie straps, and the doors are sealed. It remains completely protected from the elements and human contact until it arrives in Dubai.
4. Essential Export Paperwork from Origin
To clear UAE Customs, your origin paperwork must be flawless. You will need:
- The original Title/Registration certificate from the country of origin.
- The original commercial invoice or bill of sale.
- A copy of your passport and UAE visa.
Pro Tip: Ensure the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or chassis number on the physical car matches the paperwork exactly. Classic cars often have worn or hard-to-read chassis plates, which can cause massive delays at Dubai Customs if they cannot be verified.
5. Port Clearance and Flatbed Delivery
When your car arrives at Jebel Ali, the clock starts ticking. Port storage fees (demurrage) for uncollected containers are incredibly high.
- Our dedicated customs brokers pre-clear your paperwork through the Mirsal 2 system before the ship even docks.
- Once customs is cleared, we do not drive your vintage car out of the port. We dispatch a specialized flatbed recovery truck to collect the vehicle straight from the container and deliver it directly to your home garage or your chosen classic car workshop for detailing.
