For millions of Indian expats, the UAE is a second home. But whether you are relocating back for good or simply sending that beautiful Arabian-style sofa back to your family in Kerala or Mumbai, shipping furniture to India requires careful planning.

Indian customs are notoriously strict. If you ship household goods without understanding the tax laws, your furniture could be held at the port, accumulating massive storage fees, or you could be hit with unexpected import duties that cost more than the furniture itself.

At Chevron Sea Shipping, we manage the UAE-to-India shipping route every single day. Here is your ultimate guide to shipping your household goods safely, legally, and cost-effectively.

1. The Golden Rule: The Transfer of Residence (TR) Allowance.

If you’re moving back to India for good, the Transfer of Residence (TR) rule is your best friend.

  • What it is: The Indian government allows returning citizens to bring back their used personal and household goods (like furniture, clothes, and kitchenware) duty-free, provided certain conditions are met.
  • The Requirements: You must have lived abroad for at least 2 years and be returning to India for permanent settlement. The goods must have been in your possession and used by you for at least six months.
  • The Catch: The TR concession applies mostly to used furniture and personal effects. It does not give you a free pass to import brand-new, boxed furniture to sell. Customs officials will inspect the goods for signs of use.

2. Electronics vs. Furniture: Know the Duties

Even if you qualify for the TR concession, Indian Customs treats electronics very differently from a wooden dining table.

  • Furniture: Used wooden beds, sofas, and dining sets are usually cleared through customs without any duties under TR.
  • Electronics & Appliances: High-value appliances (such as large flat-screen TVs, large refrigerators, or washing machines) often attract a flat rate of customs duty—typically 15% to 36%, depending on the current tariff and the item’s depreciated value.
  • Pro Tip: We highly recommend declaring the realistic, depreciated value of your used electronics. Do not pack a brand-new TV in its original factory box hidden inside a wardrobe; if customs finds it, you will be heavily fined.

3. Choosing Between FCL and LCL Sea Freight

How much are you sending?

  • FCL (Full Container Load): If you are moving a 3-bedroom villa, you will need an exclusive 20ft or 40ft container. The container is loaded at your home in Dubai, sealed, and sent directly to ports such as Nhava Sheva (Mumbai), Chennai, or Kochi.
  • LCL, or Less than Container Load, is a service that lets you send a bed, a sofa, and ten boxes in a shared container with other items. You only pay for the exact volume (CBM) your furniture occupies, making it very cost-effective for smaller loads.

4. Packing for the Ocean (and the Monsoon)

Shipping wooden furniture across the Arabian Sea requires heavy-duty protection.

  • Humidity Control: The journey, combined with the Indian climate, can cause untreated wood to warp or grow mold. To protect the finish on your furniture, our packing crews use special silica gel packets that absorb moisture and wrapping materials that allow air to circulate.
  • Export Wrapping: To keep fragile carvings and glass table tops safe during transport in India, we use multi-layered export blankets, corrugated cardboard, and edge protectors.

5. The Door-to-Door Advantage

Clearing goods through Indian ports can be a bureaucratic headache. You do not want to be standing in a customs office in Mumbai trying to translate packing lists.

  • The Chevron Solution: We provide complete Door-to-Door service. We pack your things in Dubai, handle ocean freight, and our trusted Indian partners handle all customs clearance for you. Once everything is cleared, we bring the furniture straight to your new home, no matter where you live.
