In Dubai, moving from a 1-bedroom apartment in JLT is an entirely different logistical beast than moving a 4-bedroom villa in The Springs. Although getting your belongings from A to B is what matters, the equipment, manpower, and challenges greatly differ. Knowing these helps you prepare and avoid unpleasant surprises in your quote.
At Chevron Sea Shipping, we customise our approach to your property type. Here are the main reasons why the strategy changes.
1. The Access Factor: Elevators vs. Long Walks
Apartment Moves
- The Challenge: It’s always about the elevator! If the service lift is busy, small, or broken, the move slows down. We also have to navigate long corridors and tight corners.
- The Strategy: We use dollies to roll boxes quickly from your unit to the elevator. We also protect the corridors, floors and walls of the building to avoid damage and follow the management’s rules.
Villa Moves
- The Challenge: Most villas do not have elevators, but they may have stairs. The most challenging part of this is usually the “Long Carry” – the distance from the front door to where the truck is parked.
- The Strategy: If the compound has narrow streets or parking regulations, we may need to hire extra porters to transport the furniture from the truck to the villa.
2. The “Volume” Difference
Apartment Moves
- Standard furniture: sofa, beds, TVs, and kitchen items.
- Packing Time: Usually 1 day for packing and moving.
Villa Moves
Villas contain “invisible volume.” You have a garage, a maid’s room, a storage room under the stairs, and often a garden.
- The Strategy: Splitting up villa moves into two days is often the most effective. Day 1 is for packing everything (boxing up the kitchen, wrapping furniture). Day 2 is for loading the trucks and moving. This reduces stress and ensures nothing is rushed.
3. The Garden & Outdoor Items
This is the most notable difference.
Apartment Moves
- May have a small balcony table and two chairs.
Villa Moves
Often have heavy outdoor items: trampolines, jungle gyms, large BBQ grills, potted plants, and gazebos.
The Technique:
- Trampolines/Playsets: We have a special carpentry crew for dismantling and reassembling at the new location.
- Plants: Transporting big ceramic pots is tricky but doable. We pack and secure them in the truck so they don’t spill soil.
4. Community Permissions
Apartment Moves
- Move-Out Permits are a must from the building management (e.g., in Marina or Downtown). You might have to schedule the elevator a few days in advance.
Villa Moves
- Permit needs are the same for Arabian Ranches, The Meadows, or Damac Hills, but they are more focused on access to the gates. The security needs to authorise the passage of our big trucks on the residential streets.
Note: Some of the villa communities have truck bans on Fridays or Sundays to minimise the noise. We check these rules for you in advance.
5. The “White Glove” Touch for Large Items
There is often bigger, more grand furniture in the villas—pianos, 8-seater dining tables, and enormous chandeliers.
- Apartment: It can be next to impossible to fit a 3-meter sofa into a service lift. We may have to do some lifting to the next floors (which is an extra charge).
- Villa: We often have extra room to manoeuvre, but we need to be careful with your bannisters and staircases when we move heavy things to the upper floors.
