Break bulk is when a container, whether or not it is modified, is not enough. It’s the solution used for over-sized cargo. In effect, chevron will “containerize” the space for it by laying a bed of Flat Racks and Platforms on top of standard containers, and then lash the cargo to them to create what looks like a giant pen.
With this method, there is almost no limit to the size of cargo that can be carried. In 2011, Chevron Sea Shippingsuccessfully loaded a ship’s superstructure weighing 450 tones that measured 32 meters long and 22 meters high. And yes, not all cargo travels in conveniently separate pieces! The train carriage you go to work on, the yacht you see out at sea, that digger on the building site you pass every day, etc. Sometimes these giants travel in one piece aboard container ships!
