Leaving Dubai is bittersweet. It is the end of an incredible chapter, but closing out a life in the UAE is one of the most administratively exhausting things you will ever do.
When you move to Dubai, you usually arrive with just a few suitcases and a lot of excitement. But when you repatriate and move back home—whether that is to the UK, India, Canada, or Australia—you are bringing back years of accumulated memories, furniture, and a completely different life.
Between canceling your visa, closing your bank accounts, selling your car, and saying goodbye to friends, the logistics can feel completely overwhelming.
At Chevron Sea Shipping, we specialize in repatriation moving services. We take the physical move entirely off your plate so you can focus on the paperwork. Here is our essential checklist for a smooth journey home.
1. The “Keep, Sell, Ship” Triage
Start this process at least two months before your departure date.
- Sell: The GCC has a specific market. Your GCC-spec car, heavy 220V electronics (if moving to North America), and massive outdoor patio furniture are usually better sold on Dubizzle than shipped.
- Ship: Focus on shipping high-quality furniture, sentimental items, fine art, and your wardrobe.
- The Chevron Tip: When our surveyor visits your home, we will help you calculate the volume. Sometimes, leaving behind that IKEA bookshelf is the difference between needing a shared (LCL) container and a dedicated 20ft (FCL) container.
2. Master the “Transfer of Residence” (ToR) Rules
This is the most critical hurdle in repatriation logistics.
- The Trap: When you bring your belongings back to your home country, customs authorities may inspect your container and try to charge you standard import duties and VAT.
- The Solution: Most countries offer a “Transfer of Residence” (ToR) tax relief program for returning citizens. To qualify, you usually have to prove that you have lived outside the country for over 12 months and have owned the goods for at least 6 months.
- Our Support: Every country has different rules. Whether you are dealing with HMRC in the UK or the ABF in Australia, our international moving coordinators will guide you through the exact ToR customs forms you need to complete. Hence, your used household goods enter your home country tax-free.
3. Time the Bureaucracy (Visas & DEWA)
Your physical move must align perfectly with your administrative timeline.
- DEWA: You need electricity and AC on moving day (especially in the summer). Do not disconnect your DEWA until the day after our packing crews have finished.
- Visas: Keep copies of your active UAE visa and Emirates ID. You will need these to prove your residency status for export customs clearance at Jebel Ali Port.
4. Pack a “Survival” Suitcase
Sea freight takes time. If you are shipping your life back to Europe or the Americas, your container might take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive.
- Pack your suitcases as if you are going on a two-month holiday.
- Include all original vital documents (birth certificates, school records, medical files), essential winter clothing (you won’t need that in Dubai, but you will when you land!), and your laptops. Everything else goes into the shipping container.
5. Choose a Door-to-Door Partner
Repatriation is not the time to micromanage different contractors.
- You do not want to hire a packing crew in Dubai, a separate freight forwarder for the ocean voyage, and then try to find a local delivery company when you land.
- The Turnkey Solution: Chevron Sea Shipping provides a complete Door-to-Door service. We pack your Dubai villa, manage the ocean freight, handle the destination customs clearance through our global network of accredited partners, and deliver the boxes directly into the rooms of your new home. We even take the empty boxes away.
