You finally got your hands on that motorcycle you’ve always wanted, right there in Dubai.
You’ve ridden it across the Hatta mountains and down Jumeirah Beach Road. Now that you are moving back home, leaving it behind isn’t an option.
Whether it is a custom Harley-Davidson, a sleek Ducati, or a classic Triumph, shipping a motorcycle internationally is completely different from moving household furniture. A bike is a heavy, awkward, and highly regulated piece of machinery containing hazardous fluids.
If you are planning to ship your motorcycle from the UAE to Europe, the UK, or the USA, you need a logistics partner who knows exactly how to navigate the red tape and protect your paint job.
At Chevron Sea Shipping, we transport high-value motorcycles worldwide. Here is the step-by-step process for doing it safely.
1. The Golden Ticket: The RTA Export Certificate
Before we can even look at a shipping container, the paperwork must be flawless. You cannot export a vehicle from the UAE without official clearance.
- Clear Your Fines: First, pay off any outstanding Salik or traffic fines associated with the bike.
- Cancel the Registration: You must take your bike to an RTA testing center to cancel the local registration and hand over the Dubai license plates.
- Get the Export Certificate: The RTA will issue a blue “Export Certificate” in your name. The original document is essential; Dubai Customs won’t release the bike from the port without it.
2. Preparing the Motorcycle for Transport (Safety First)
Shipping companies classify motorized vehicles as “Dangerous Goods” because of their potential to catch fire or explode. We cannot simply roll it onto a ship. Before transit, the bike must be strictly prepped:
- Drain the Fuel: The gas tank must be drained to almost empty (usually less than a quarter tank is allowed, though some carriers require it to be completely dry).
- Disconnect the battery. The cables need to be separated and insulated with tape to avoid any unintentional electrical discharges while we’re out there for weeks.
- Clean the Bike: Wash your motorcycle thoroughly. Destination customs (especially in places like Australia or the USA) are incredibly strict about importing foreign soil or pests. A dirty bike will incur expensive quarantine cleaning fees upon arrival.
The best way to protect your motorcycle? Custom wooden crating.
Motorcycles present a unique challenge when shipping. Unlike cars, which are usually just driven into a shipping container and strapped down, bikes need special treatment to stay upright during a journey, especially if that journey involves rough seas.
- Why We Crate: We highly recommend building a custom-fit, ISPM-15-certified wooden crate for your motorcycle.
- The Process: We load the bike onto a heavy-duty wooden pallet. We use specialized soft-tie ratchet straps on the suspension and frame to secure it perfectly upright. Then, we build the walls and roof of the crate around it.
- The Benefit: This crate acts as an armored shell. It allows your bike to be safely loaded into an LCL (shared) container with household goods without the risk of another box falling and crushing your fairings.
4. Destination Regulations (The Tricky Part)
Getting the bike out of Dubai is only half the battle. Getting it legally onto the roads in your new country requires planning.
- Shipping to the USA: The US is notoriously strict. Your bike must comply with EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and DOT (Department of Transportation) standards. If it is a non-US specification bike, importing it can be extremely difficult and costly.
- Shipping a bike to Europe or the UK? Be prepared to demonstrate you’ve owned it for a specific duration—typically six months—to be eligible for Transfer of Residence (ToR) tax relief. This can save you from paying significant import VAT. Furthermore, the bike might require some minor tweaks, such as headlight adjustments, to meet local roadworthiness standards.
