Are you dreaming about the Gold Coast beaches, the Sydney Harbour, or the coffee scene in Melbourne?

One of the difficulties of moving from Dubai to Australia, which many expats do, is biosecurity.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) protects Australia from pests and diseases. Because of this, your household goods shipment is being thoroughly inspected.

Moving to Australia is not as simple as a “pack and go”. Here is how to deal with the stringent regulations with Chevron Sea Shipping.

1. The ‘Big No-No’ List

Before you think about what to pack, there are some things you need to know about what you are not allowed to bring.

If you pack these items, your entire container shipment will be held up, possibly fumigated at your cost, and items may be seized or destroyed.

  • Unfinished Wood and Bark: Any rustic furniture with bark is hazardous.
  • Wicker and Cane: Your patio furniture from Dubai? It could be a nesting ground for beetles, and is nearly impossible to clear through Australian quarantine.
  • Dried flowers & potpourri: absolutely no
  • Seeds, foods, and spices: Do not bring your pantry! Even sealed spices can trigger inspections. In Australia, it’s safer and cheaper to buy food.

2. The Scrub It Clean Rule

Here is where most people mess it up. The enemy is soil.

If you are sending:

  • Camping gear (tents, boots): They must be scrubbed down—no remnants of Dubai sand or dried.
  • Vacuum Cleaners: Empty your bag or canister and wash your filters before you pack.
  • Garden Tools & Lawnmowers: These must be steam-cleaned to remove any soil and plant matter.
  • Outdoor Furniture: Check the undersides of your tables and chairs for webs or dirt.

Our packing teams are seasoned to identify high-risk items at Chevron Sea Shipping. If we find dirty garden shoes, we will tell you to clean them or leave them to avoid paying fines later.

3. Do You Need Fumigation?

Sometimes your shipment will be fumigated (treated with gas) by Australian customs to kill pests.

If you bring items made of certain woods, bamboo, or cane, you might be required to get them fumigated.

  • ISPM 15 Standards: We guarantee that the wooden crates and pallets used for your shipment comply with ISPM 15 international standards. This way, your shipment won’t be delayed due to packaging.

4. The Paperwork: Form B534

Australia’s B534 Form (Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement) is similar to the UK’s ToR1.

You have to complete this to explain the items you are bringing. The form asks what your goods are made of (e.g., “Do you have items made of wood?”).

Be honest. If you check “No” and they find wood, you’ll be penalized. Checking “Yes” means the item may be examined, but it does not mean the item is banned.

5. Transit Time: Plan Ahead

Be prepared for the duration of the trip from Jebel Ali to the main Australian ports (Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle, Brisbane).

  • Sea freight takes 5 to 7 weeks, and then there are 10-14 days for customs and quarantine clearance.
  • Quarantine Delays: Australian customs have always been extensive. Expect to spend more time in customs on arrival. Don’t schedule your move-in date for the same day the ship arrives!
